In order to promote the culture of Diversity & Inclusion in the work environment of Mineração Rio do Norte (MRN), the ‘MRN pra Todos’ Program is intended for demonstrating, in practice, that competence does not have different genders, ethnic origins, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, abilities or backgrounds. Based on these premises, the company seeks to integrate distinct talents with respect and in a fair way.

MRN pra Todos embraces professionals from various areas to secure greater representation, to encourage and appreciate the participation of diversified talents, such as women, black people, people with disabilities, and LGBT individuals in the company.

  • "Minerando Juntas" (Mining Together) is launched, an embryonic project on the theme of diversity with affirmative actions focused on female empowerment.
  • Preparation of the indicator and target for the increase in the percentage of women at MRN.
  • Formation of the team and preparation of the ‘Minerando Juntas’ Work Plan, considering specific areas.
  • Definition of program goals and actions for the short, medium, and long term.
  • Trainee Program not considering age and languages as prerequisites.
  • Apprentice Program with wider coverage of neighboring communities.
  • Increased retention of women in various positions.
  • Pulse Survey on Diversity.
  • Re-branding of the Diversity Program.
  • Launching of the MRN pra Todos - MRN's Diversity and Inclusion program.
  • Definition of the Program’s Governance.
  • Definition of goals, strategies, and work plan.
  • Promoting a sense of belonging in relation to work by ensuring that managers visibly support the various forms of diversity.

Implemented in March/2019, the Minerando Juntas movement was the embryo of the MRN pra Todos Program. Created to increase retention and development of female talents for leadership positions in the company, the program brought about affirmative actions focused on female empowerment.

The movement spotlighted the importance of women's work in MRN's value chain by creating opportunities in all areas of the company: administrative, maintenance or operations.

The rapid results of Minerando Juntas indicated that MRN is on the right track to expand its Diversity & Inclusion front. The Indicator for the increase in the percentage of women in MRN's workforce shows that in 2019, the company had 6.6% women in the workforce. In 2020, this number has increased to 7.8%, which corresponds to a 1% growth.

In late 2020, the company repositioned its Diversity & Inclusion Program, making the transition from Minerando Juntas, focused on gender diversity, to MRN pra Todos, a project that encompasses all areas of diversity: gender, ethnic origin, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, differentiated abilities or backgrounds.

The program provides for a strong educational bias about respecting differences and leads to a rethinking of the company's actions in order to ensure equity both in people management policies and practices and in business strategy.

The transition to MRN pra Todos generated greater engagement of the company's managers in the recruitment and selection processes. In order not to lose any talent, the 2020 edition of the Trainee Program did not consider such items as age and languages as prerequisites. The Young Apprentice Program also had a broader reach, with more participation of local communities.

Areas that make up the Program

Methods and measurement tools to reach the program's objectives.

Mapping of competences to be developed and/or improved, so that the diversity journey is consolidated by building up adherence practices.

Workshops and lectures for all audiences to raise and broaden awareness about the importance of equity for the business.

To provide for an inclusive infrastructure that enables diversification and favors talent retention.

The gateway for any employee into the company. The goal is to explore mechanisms that expand retention of diversified talents for positions in all areas of the company, based on the availability of vacancies.

To ensure that people management processes and leadership attitudes are aligned with the diversity strategy.

Continuous improvement of the compensation and benefits practice, appropriate to the characteristics of the company's various publics.

Investment in multi-skilled teams

MRN believes that different people, when participating in the same purpose, can share different ideas and visions, thus finding the best solutions, since different perspectives generate new ways to solve challenges. This way, MRN pra Todos contributes to generate innovative, high-performance teams in the company.

Raising awareness and investing in diversity is essential if we are to achieve equity in business, the job market, and society. Different people and inclusive environments have a transformative potential, to say the least. Together we have the opportunity to de-construct biases, seek behavior change, and adopt solid strategies for building plural environments. I believe MRN pra Todos perfectly symbolizes this connection between different people as part of the same purpose.

Carina Carvalho, Internal Control Analyst at MRN, who is leading the MRN Pra Todos program

It is gratifying to be part of MRN, a company committed to people and the environment. It really is a differentiated company that appreciates and encourages local labor.

Jocenildo Marinho, MRN's Environmental Analyst, a talent from the Lago do Moura Quilombola community, in Oriximiná, Pará State.

I passed the program as a young apprentice for administrative technician. I gained experience in the warehouse at the Porto de Trombetas Hospital and then an opportunity arose at the mine to work as an administrative assistant, where I have been since then. Much learning and teaching that I will carry with me for life. I have participated in several in-house training courses in the quality area and in auditing groups in other areas. It is very meaningful to be part of this team.

Erivane Sousa, PCD talent who is an administrative assistant.

MRN's industrial complex, in Porto Trombetas, is divided into administrative, industrial, port and mine facilities - the mines being located 28 km away from the townsite. The ore is transported on the Company’s 46-wagon trains from the mining area to the refinery.

By being established in a region of very rich biodiversity - the Saracá-Taquera National Forest, a sustainable-use protected area, Porto Trombetas is surprising not only for its natural beauty, but also for the quality of life, safety and complete infrastructure it provides for its residents and visitors.

The Townsite

Our community is made up by people from Pará and several other Brazilian states. We share cultures and value collective well-being. The housing structure at Porto Trombetas is complete and has basic sanitation, hospital, school, a commercial area, services, banks, leisure spaces, restaurants, airport and other logistic infrastructures - all within walking distance from work and housing spaces.

In order to provide accommodation for its employees and contractors, MRN offers 916 houses to those who come with their families to live in Porto Trombetas, in addition to 58 living quarters with collective rooms to those who need less space.

On average, 6,000 people can be accommodated in the townsite with comfort and quality of life. Residents and visitors enjoy the exuberant nature of the Saracá-Taquera National Forest and the Trombetas River, which surround the district. The townsite has security, paved roads and spaces for outdoor sporting activities, in addition to light, organized traffic.

Adding to all this, the community features a cultural mix from various parts of Brazil, with people attracted by the professional opportunities in one of the largest mining enterprises in the Amazon.

The educational services in Porto Trombetas are concentrated in the School Professor Jonathas Pontes Athias, which offers early childhood education, elementary and high school.

The school is managed by Fundação Vale do Trombetas (FVT) - a non-profit institution created in 1997 for this purpose - which since 2020 has been run by Sistema de Ensino Equipe.

The facility serves the children of the employees of MRN, of the companies and institutions that provide services in Porto Trombetas, in addition to children and adolescents from neighboring communities.

The district residents have their own hospital, with 22 beds, in addition to 24-hour emergency care.

Medical specialties include: cardiology, psychiatry, general surgery, urology, anesthesiology, orthopedics, traumatology, pediatrics, gynecology, obstetrics, occupational medicine, neurology, dermatology, vascular surgery, endocrinology, ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology, as well as laboratory tests and diagnostic imaging. Roughly 600 surgeries are performed each year.

The Porto Trombetas Hospital (HPTR) also provides services in the areas of dentistry, physiotherapy, nutrition, orthoptics, speech therapy and psychology. Managed in co-partnership between MRN and Pró-Saúde Associação Beneficente de Assistência Social e Hospitalar, the HPTR was established in 1997 and is a reference for more than 6 thousand people, with outpatient medical care and free emergency service to the local population.

With a history of frequent investments in service quality and infrastructure, the hospital also has its Clinical Analysis Laboratory certified by the National Quality Control Program, the largest provider of proficiency trials in Brazil. The hospital’s laboratory has a capacity to perform over 70,000 emergency and routine complementary exams per year, such as ultrasound scan, endoscopy, radiology, spirometry, campimetry, tonometry, audiometry, electroencephalogram and brain mapping, electrocardiography, Holter, MAPA, ergometric test, echocardiogram and polysomnography.

The Surgical Center has rooms equipped with modern equipment for videolaparoscopy and videoarthroscopy surgery, including shoulder, elbow and knee. If necessary, the Intermediate Treatment Center has equipment that guarantees the maintenance of the patient's life until being transferred to a reference center.

Besides the hospital, MRN offers: an outpatient clinic in the commercial center of the port, where residents of the riverside communities are assisted; a nursing facility in one of the mines; a central outpatient clinic in the mining area, for medical, dental and emergency care. The company also develops a permanent program of preventive and assistance medicine with the riverside population.

MEC

For moments of sports, leisure, culture and quality of life, the townsite community relies on Mineração Esporte Clube (MEC). The club has 60,000 m2, without considering the parking lot and the movie theater.

It has a soccer field, athletics track, multi-sports courts, sand courts, squash and tennis courts, sports gymnasium, a water park, gymnastics rooms and music, besides a large hall with stage, dance floor, bar and saunas.

Among the activities offered, there are also classes of ballroom dancing, weight lifting, body combat and pilates. Under the responsibility of MEC, Cineteatro Trombetas was opened in 1988 and cultural and institutional presentations are presented there, and it has been the stage for great local and national artists.

Igarapé das Pedras

Also under MEC management, it is a space for contact with nature and relaxation, with a natural swimming pool, volleyball court, sand soccer field, restaurant and all the necessary structure for tourism, cultural events and sports tournaments.

Opening hours: Saturdays and Sundays - 8 a.m. - 6 p.m

Access to Porto Trombetas is mainly by air and by river.

The district has an airport managed by MRN itself, which operates regularly with charter flights once a week and commercial flights operated by Azul Airlines on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

The flights have stopovers in Manaus (Amazonas State) and Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais State).

In river transport, boats and motorboats operate commercially to Santarém, Óbidos and the center of Oriximiná.

Currently, MRN has more than 6 thousand employees and contractors.

We care about the welfare of family members living in Porto Trombetas and we appreciate their integration into our social actions. An example is the Quality of Life Program (PQV), which seeks to promote health and well-being through physical activities, nutritional guidance and information on healthy conduct.

In addition, our professionals are invited annually to participate in surveys on the organizational climate, where items such as work environment, benefits, compensation, professional development, ethics, citizenship and corporate social responsibility are evaluated.

Actions that promote and appreciate transparency, respect and trust, thus securing a productive, motivating and challenging atmosphere that fosters people's engagement with MRN's goals.

"The company provided me with the opportunity for personal growth and to study every time I needed to develop myself. It also provided me with the opportunity for new challenges as they appeared. I had the chance to show my work here and to develop myself both professionally and financially. These 40 years with MRN are in my blood because they made my life different than I had imagined before, for the better".

João Eleutério, Mining Manager
